The series centers on Superman's Kryptonian cousin Kara Zor-El, who must embrace her superhuman abilities on Earth to become the hero she was always meant to be.
Supergirl (Kara Zor-El) was created by writer Otto Binder and artist Al Plastino in 1959. She first appeared in Action Comics #252 and later branched out into animation and the 1984 film 'Supergirl' starring Helen Slater, Faye Dunaway and Peter O'Toole.
Supergirl is just the latest character from the DC Comics universe to get their own series. Syfy is developing Krypton, a one-hour drama about Superman's grandfather set on the fictional planet.
CBS and Syfy are hoping to follow the success of Arrow (CW), The Flash (CW) and Gotham (FOX), which are steadily growing their prime time presence.
Benoist will next be seen in the Nicholas Sparks adaptation The Longest Ride, opposite Britt Robertson and Scott Eastwood.
