Apple Wants to Replace Your TiVo

Apple reinvented the computer, music player and cell phone, but now the tech giant wants to reinvent your cable TV box.

Apple Inc. is reportedly in talks with U.S. cable television providers to allow customers to use an Apple device as a set-top box for live television and online content. The company already sells an inexpensive Apple TV device that allows users to play iTunes, Netflix, Hulu Plus, YouTube, and Vimeo videos but is incompatible with live cable television.

So far, Apple has not yet reached a deal with the reluctant cable providers. Apple would also need to convince consumers to replace their TiVo box, which currently provides cable TV and web-based movie and music content together in one place. Most cable companies currently rent set-top boxes for around $10 to $15 a month with an additional cost for HD and DVR.

The talks indicate that Apple is seeking a less resistant path to enter the live television arena by teaming up with existing service providers rather than licensing content to compete with them directly. Source: WSJ
