Will There Be a Step Up 6 and Step Up 7?
Will There Be a Step Up 6 and Step Up 7?
If you love to dance, then you probably love to watch people dance. It's a simple concept that makes the Step Up movies so appealing and successful to a tune of $650 million at the global box office. Whether you love the impressive dance moves or dread them, there's no denying the dance film series is a guilty pleasure for millions of people around the world.
There have been five domestic films in the 'Step Up' franchise, Step Up (2006), Step Up 2: The Streets (2008), Step Up: 3D (2010), Step Up: Revolution (2012) and Step Up: All In (2014).
In 2016, Lionsgate partnered with Chinese company Infinity Pictures and Yue Hua Entertainment Culture Communications to produce Step Up China (aka Step Up 6) with an all-Chinese cast to appeal to Chinese audiences. But what about a so-called "Step Up 7"?
Will there be another Step Up movie?
It's unlikely a domestic Step Up 6 or Step Up 7 will happen without a big producer push. Of all of the 'Step Up' producers Jon M. Chu is the most prominent. He directed the second and third films and executive produced the fourth and fifth. Chu has never shot down the idea of developing another 'Step Up' film, but has recently turned his focus towards bringing Asian representation to US movies like, 'Crazy Rich Asians'. "I realized that I was actually part of the problem, not by contributing in some crazy way, but the fact that I hadn't done anything to help shift that," Chu told Business Insider.
What's Next for Step Up?
The chances of another 'Step Up' movie is even less likely considering the success of the streaming series Step Up: High Water, based on the film franchise. YouTube has ordered a second season of the popular dance drama from Lionsgate. The last three 'Step Up' movies were released by Lionsgate's Summit Entertainment label.
Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan, who both co-starred in the original 'Step Up' film, executive produced 'Step Up: High Water' Season One along with Adam Shankman, Jennifer Gibgot, and Meredith Milton.
The series focuses on several ambitious young dancers in a contemporary performing arts school in Atlanta. Sage Odom (Ne-Yo) is the legendary founder of Atlanta's famed High Water Performing Arts School. Collette (Naya Rivera), is a former dancer turned High Water administrator whose passion for her students is only matched by her history with Sage, and secrets of her own.
Dancers Janelle (Lauryn McClain) and Tal (Petrice Jones), are twins who are uprooted from suburban Ohio to live with their Uncle Al (Faizon Love). As the pair settle into their new home, new school, and the new life they face big challenges. Series regular cast also includes Marcus Mitchell as Dondre, Jade Chynoweth as Odalie, Carlito Olivero as Davis, Terrence Green as Rigo, Eric Graise as King, and Kendra Oyesanya as Poppy.
